A new American Corner was launched yesterday in Matara, following the signing of an Mou between the US Embassy and the Matara Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
According to a statement released by the US Embassy, the centre was opened on the ground floor of the Chamber building at No. 149 Hakmana Road in Matara. The American Corner is to offer free programmes and training for the area residents. Programs will include English classes, coding and computer skills, leadership and public speaking training, and a range of film screenings and cultural opportunities.
“The new American Corner represents the U.S. Embassy’s commitment to building our relationship with the people of the Southern Province,” Nancy VanHorn, the U.S. Embassy’s acting Public Affairs Officer, was quoted as saying.
The Matara American Corner follows the successful launch of the U.S. Embassy’s Information Hub (‘iHub”) in March this year. Current programs include public speaking and English. The iHub will continue operating until the new American Corner is opened in the coming months.
