A fundamental rights petition challenging the appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister has been filed at the Supreme Courts by Ven. Dambara Amila Thero today (Nov 28).
The petition requested the Supreme Court to disband the gazette notification issued by President Maithripala Sirisena to appoint Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister while ousting Ranil Wickremesinghe from the said position.
Ven Amila Thero has sought a verdict from the Supreme Court that confirms this action taken by the President has violated fundamental rights and as well as an interim order suspending the activities of Mahinda Rajapaksa in the premiership and of the Cabinet of Ministers until the court concludes hearing of the petition.
Ranil Wickremesinghe, Mahinda Rajapaksa and 53 cabinet members and the AG were named as respondents in the case.
