The Government has decided to pay compensation to the victims of Meethotamulla garbage dump, the government news portal reported.
Accordingly, Rs. 100, 000 is to be paid for a death while property damages will be paid up to a maximum of Rs 2.5 million.
The compensation to the victims will be paid under the insurance scheme for natural disasters obtained by the Ministry of Finance through the National Insurance Trust Fund.
In addition to that, the treasury will issue the required funds to pay compensation to the Meethotamulla Victims soon after the government decides the amount to be paid to each victim, the statement said.
The treasury has granted money to provide cooked meals for the displaced people of the area and the government will take steps to rebuild the houses, which are in risky conditions or to settle families in alternate places.
