The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested Commissioner of Prisons (Rehabilitation) Emil Ranjan Lamahewa last night over the deaths of inmates during the prison riot at the Welikada Prison in 2012. Commissioner Lamahewa was then Prisons Superintendent in charge of the Magazine Prison.
Police said he will be produced before the Colombo magistrate today along with Inspector Neomal Rangajeewa of the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB), who was arrested over the incident yesterday.
At least 27 prison inmates, including suspects in remand custody, were killed during the prison riot.
