The Welisara Navy Base has been declared as an isolated area after 30 sailors at the base tested positive for COVID-19.
One sailor who had fallen ill after going on leave and admitted to the Welikanda hospital in Polonnaruwa tested positive yesterday while 29 others at the camp who shared quarters with him tested positive today after being subjected to PCR tests.
Army Commander Lt. Gen Shavendra Silva, who is Head of the National Operation Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19, further explained that steps have been taken to inform sailors serving at the base who had gone on leave to immediately report back to undergo PCR tests.
