Whale carcass washes up in Matara

News

The body of a whale has washed up at Kamburugamuwa Beach in Matara. The body, which washed up yesterday, was in a state of decomposition and a terrible stench pervaded the entire area.

Despite the stench, a large number of people flocked to the site to get a glimpse of the carcass.

Officials from the Matara offices of the Disaster Management Center and the Department of Wildlife Conservation, along with officers from the Kotawila police and the Mirissa Coast Guard office were all present at the scene to conduct investigations.

A wildlife officer said action will be taken to dispose of the whale carcass after obtaining a court order.
