The Prima Company has decided to increase its price of a kilo of wheat flour by Rs 5.50 from today (Sept 6), sources said.
Meanwhile, the Bakery Owners Association has warned that prices of bakery products too would be increased as a result of the price hike.
President of the Association N.K. Jayawardena told Times Online that the Prima Company had informed them in writing that wheat flour prices would be increased.
He said that the company had cited the depreciation of the rupee as a main reason for the price hike.
Meanwhile, the National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection (NMCRR) has requested the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) to take legal action against the wheat flour company over this move.
NMCRR Chairman Ranjith Vithanage, in a letter to the CAA Chairman had pointed out that the price increase is unlawful since the company had not obtained the CAA's approval despite being required to do so in line with the Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
