Woman killed, two children missing after trishaw falls into canal

A 21-year-old woman was killed and two children, aged seven and two years were reported missing after a three-wheeler toppled into a canal at Mahiyangana last night.

Police Media Unit said the three-wheeler toppled into the canal after it collided head-on with another three-wheeler along the Mahiyangana-Badulla Road near the 17th Milepost.

The victims are residents of Meegahakiwula. 

According to police, the three-wheeler which toppled into the canal had been washed about a kilometer downstream. There were six persons inside the three-wheeler at the time of the incident. They included two males including the three-wheeler driver, two females and two children. The two males and two females were rescued and admitted to Meegahakiwula Hospital in serious condition. One of the females later died while two other injured persons were transferred to Badulla Hospital for further treatment. 

The two children remain missing and efforts are underway to locate them using divers. The driver of the other three-wheeler, who suffered minor injuries, has been arrested by police and is undergoing treatment at the Mahiyangana Hospital under police guard.
