Some private sector trade union members staged a walk out on Thursday demanding that the proposed interim-budget wage increase of Rs.2500 be made law, union leader Anton Marcus said. Commencing 12 noon, workers in the Biyagama, Ja-Ela, Katunayaka, Ekala, plantation unions and industrial zones staged a walk-out from their workplaces. A crowd of about 5000 is expected to demonstrate in Colombo since most have not obtained the proposed increase for the private sector by the new Sirisena administration. Should the government provide some sort of relief to the workers, it would be announced during the rally, Mr. Marcus had stated previously in an interview with the Business Times. (SD)
