The Disaster Management Center (DMC) has issued advisory for severe lightning today.
The advisory issued stated thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in Uva, Eastern, Northern and North-central provinces. They also added fairly heavy showers above 75 mm may occur at some places in these areas.
They warned of localized strong winds occurring temporarily during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.
The Department of Meteorology also advised people to Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees, avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms also to avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms.
Apart from that they warned the general public to beware of fallen trees and power lines due to strong winds and heavy rain.
