‘Sampath Piyasa’, a recycling plant which can recycle 10 tons of non-biodegradable plastic-like waste per month was commissioned at the Karadiyana waste dump yesterday (27).
The plant will stop adding to the dump, the daily collection of non-biodegradable waste from the highly populated neighbourhood, Karadiyana Waste Management Project Manager Dhanuka Wijeratne said.
Many people are used to just throw their bags of dirt on to the roadside in and around the ‘Weras Ganaga’ bank on their way to office in the morning, and through this unit the immense damage caused to the environment can be controlled, he said.
Mr Wijeratne explained that they already use the biodegradable waste to produce carbonic fertiliser, and this new plant will help to deal with the recycling of the non-biodegradable waste.
People behind ‘Sampath Piyasa’ project are Karadiyana Waste Management Project Manager Dhanuka Wijeratne, Assistant Manager Chinthaka Udaya, Field Assistant Madhura Kumara and Western Province Waste Management Authority Director Nalin Mannapperuma
