Sri Lanka sprinter Tharushi Karunaratne won gold medal in the Women’s 800m event at the 19th Asian Games with a sensational timing of 2:03.20 in Hangzhou, China a short while ago today (4).
Karunaratne, who also claimed gold medals at the recent Asian Athletics Championship and Asian Under-20 Athletics Championship, became the first to claim a gold medal for her country after 21 years in the event.
India’s Harmilan Bains clocked 2:03.75 to claim the silver medal, while China’s Chunyu Wang won the bronze medal with a timing of 2:03.90.
Sri Lanka’s second athlete in the event, Gayanthika Abeyratne was placed eighth with a timing of 2:05.87.
