Ten selected schools will get the privilege of acquiring synthetic tracks under the Schools Sports Development Project, which is expected to initiate jointly by the Ministry of Sports and Ministry of Education.
Accordingly these selected schools will be provided with a synthetic training track of 130metres as a first step.
As an initiative to the project, the Ministry of Education revealed that construction of synthetic tracks will be laid on the facilities of five selected schools under the project.
The Ministry of Education outlined that this project is part of developing infrastructure facilities among sports schools across the country, and providing synthetic tracks is one of the main components of the whole plan.
"When selecting schools, we had to obviously give priority to those who contribute immensely to the country in athletics. As these schools, which are known to be the main contributors to local athletics, there are schools that are dominant and specialised in other sports, like volleyball, cricket and football. There will be projects upcoming to uplift standards of those schools too," a top official of the Ministry of Education stated.
The five schools earmarked through the initial project are forerunners in schools athletics, Walala A. Ratnayake Central College, D.S. Senanayake College Ampara, Vijitha Vidyalaya Dickwella, Anuradhapura Central College and Weera Kappettipola Maha Vidyalaya Akuramboda.
