Former Sri Lanka opening batsman and former national batting and 'A' team coach Avishka Gunawardene will join the Afghanistan cricket coaching staff, according to official information.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced that it has appointed Gunawardene into its national coaching staff, and his appointment will come to affect with Afghanistan's upcoming T20 series against Pakistan, to be held in Sooriyawewa.
Gunawardene, 44, was renowned for his prominent role as Sri Lanka 'A' coach which earned him the position of batting coach of Sri Lanka cricket team.
The southpaw, has played 61 ODIs and six Tests for Sri Lanka, and has scored a century and 12 half centuries with a tally of 1708 runs in ODIs.
In Tests, his tally stands at 181 runs, but has an impressive record of 6680 first class runs with 12 centuries and 40 half centuries in 129 games.
Gunawardene will initially take charge as Afghanistan's batting coach at the upcoming T20 series against Pakistan in September.
