Sri Lanka top order batsman and one-time ODI captain Lahiru Thirimanne, has announced his intention to retire from cricket, TimesOnline learns.
Thirimanne, who last appeared for Sri Lanka in a Test match against India in March 2022, has not been part of the national side in any format for over 14 months.
He resettled in Australia, before returning to play in the ongoing SLC Major League Tournament for his local club, Ragama CC.
Thirimanne appeared in 43 Tests and 127 ODIs for Sri Lanka from 2010 to 2022, accumulating a tally of 5274 runs across both formats.
A stylish left-handed top order batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler, Thirimanne had also acted as a vice-captain of the Sri Lanka ODI team, and was appointed captain for the gold medal winning team of the Incheon Asian Games 2014 and of the three-match ODI tour against Pakistan in 2019, when an international cricket team first visited since the 2009 terrorist attack in Lahore.
