The Sri Lankan diaspora finally broke out of the shackles imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic last Saturday (25) with the return of the East Coast Cricket Festival.
The annual event, organised by the Ananda College Old Boys’ Association – East Coast USA -- for the 15th year, took place in New Jersey under the patronage of Mr. Mohan Pieris, Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United Nations, and his wife, Priyanthi.
The participating teams included old boys from Ananda, Nalanda, Royal, S. Thomas’, Maris Stella, Trinity, St. John’s Jaffna, Isipathana, and Mahanama took part in the tournament.
The semi-finals saw Mahanama defeating the hosts Ananda and Royal prevailing over Maris Stella.
The Royal team, led by Ruchira Jayasooriya, overcame Mahanama, in the final to win the Colonel Olcott Trophy for the seventh time.
Since its inception in 2006, the annual cricket festival has been the premier Sri Lankan sports event and the community gatherings in the US east coast.
