The Sri Lanka Postal Department exhibited their prowess in badminton, when their men's team under the captaincy of Thusitha Hulangamuwa outplayed Sri Lanka Police 3-1 in the final, to annex the 'C' Division title at the State Services Badminton Championship 2017, coducted at the Mercantile Indoor Stadium.
In the final encounter, which consisted of three singles and two doubles, the Postal Department men's shuttlers won two singles and a double to emerge winners.
Final results:
1. Singles - M. Mendis (Postal) lost to Mangala Dehideniya (Police) 15-21, 15-21
2. Singles - H. Ranga (Postal) beat U.E.R. Chamara (Police) 21-11, 21-3
3. Singles- W. N. Asuraka (Postal) beat K .L. Liyanage (Police) 23-21, 21-13
4. Doubles - Thusitha Hulangamuwa and H. Ranga beat M. Dehideniya and U. E. R. Chamara (Police) 16-21, 21-13, 21-18
On their way to the finals, Postal Department remained unbeaten with wins over Peradeniya University 3-2, Survey Department 3-2 and Prisons Department 3-2.
The Postal Department women's team, led by Nilmini Ranathunga finished runner up in the 'B' Division Championship of the same tournament, when they lost to the SL Customs women's team 0-3 in the final.
Final results:
1. Singles - Senali Lokubandara (Customs) beat Nilmini Ranathunga (Postal) 21-9, 21-6
2. Singles - Dilumi Perera (Customs) beat Dinushi Anurudhika (Postal) 21-6, 21-8
3. Singles - Chalitha Hettigoda (Customs) beat Sandeepani Premachandra (Postal) 21-15, 21-16.
In the run up to the final, the Postal Department women beat Railway Department 3-2 and then Police Department 3 - 2
