The Nugegoda Bridge Club was inaugurated on April 6 at 9.30am at the Sanhinda Leisure Centre, Nugegoda, with the lighting of a traditional oil lamp led by Gerry Hidelaratchi the President of the Bridge Federation of Sri Lanka followed by Anthea De Alwis of the Women’s International Club, Cera Fernando of the Contract Bridge Association of Sri Lanka, Rex Perera of the Vajira Bridge Club, Ananda Ellegala of the Kandy Bridge Club, Duminda Jayawardane of the Gampaha Bridge Club,along with Kumara Samaranayake and Jagath Goonawardane, the Patron and President of the Nugegoda Bridge Club.
A Duplicate Contract Bridge Tournament was held thereafter with the participation of 60 players. The The Director for the Tournament was Rex Perera with Anthea De Alwis providing the Computer based facilities.
The First Prize was won by Rex Perera and Dilanjan De Soysa of the Vajira Bridge Club. The first runners up and second runners up prizes were won by Jagath Goonawardane and Ranmal De Mel of the Nugegoda Bridge Club and Raja Molligoda and Lakshman Jayasekera of the Vajira Bridge Club respectively.
The opening of Contract Bridge Clubs in the Island similar to the one in Nugegoda augurs well for the promotion and popularizing of the game.
Hopefully it will cater to the needs of those interested in playing bridge in and around Nugegoda.
