CR 2017: South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 96 runs

South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 96 runs in a Group 'B' match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 played at the Kennington Oval in London today (3).

Put into bat first South Africa claimed runs at gradual pace with opener Hashim Amla top scoring 103 off 115 balls inclusive of five fours and two sixes. 

Chasing 300 for victory, Sri Lanka made a good start but collapsed midway before being bowled out for 203 with 57 deliveries to spare. 

For South Africa Faf du Plessis clobbered 75 off 70 deliveries with six fours as he got together with Amla to add a partnership of 145 runs for the second wicket.

Fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep captured two wickets while Suranga Lakmal and Seekkuge Prasanna picked a scalp each. 

Sri Lanka is led by Upul Tharaga as skipper Angelo Mathews has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury. 

They made a good start with a timely opening partnership of 69 runs between Niroshan Dickwella and skipper Tharanga. 

Dickwella was out for 41 off 33 deliveries inclusive of five fours and a six while Tharanga went on to score 57 off 69 deliveries with six boundaries before the middle order collapsed. 

Kusal Perera coming in down the order made a lone battle but ran out of partners as he remained unbeaten on 44 off 66 balls inclusive of five fours. 

Leg spinner Imran Tahir who picked four wickets was named the man of the match. 

Sri Lanka will play India in their second group game on Thursday (8) at the same venue.
