Sri Lanka won its first medal at the Gold Coast Games this morning (5) in weightlifting when Chathuranga Lakmal, competing in men’s 56Kg weight class, lifted a total weight of 248kgs to win bronze medal.
Chathuranga lifted 114kgs in snatch and a further 134kgs in clean and jerk for his total weight of 248kgs.
The gold medal of the weight class was won by Malaysian Izhar Ahamed while the silver medal was claimed by Indian Gururaja.
Sri Lanka are hoping at least four medals from weightlifting at this years’ Commonwealth Games.
Since country’s first weightlifting gold medal in Melbourne Games in 2006, Sri Lankan weight-lifters have kept the lion flag flying high in each Games held thereafter.
