Krishantha Kumarage clinched the All-Island Draughts Championship conducted by the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) at its premises in Colombo Fort.
Kumarage, who last won the national title in 1996, beating V. Krishnamurthi, overcame top contenders to claim the title after 21 years.
He had to overcome 53 other contenders, who were equally masters as Kumarage on his way to the title this year.
Along with Kumarage, top contenders Sri Kantha, Vijiyanth Meltus, Ramya Gunasekara and Shelton Fernando moved to the final stages of the competition.
In a three-way battle in the final, Kumarage overcame Meltus and Fernando in style to clinch the All-Island Draughts Championship 2017.
