Motor Sports: Commando 4x4 Expedition 2015 from August 3 to 8

The second edition of the Commando 4x4 Expedition 2015 organised by the Commando Regiment of Sri Lanka will take place in two phases from August 3 to 8 scheduled to be flagged off from Point Pedro.   The aim of this event is to build infrastructure facilities of the Commando Regiment and explore the beauty of the Eastern part of the country and to promote adventure sports in Sri Lanka.   This year’s event will be conducted in two phases, first as a motor rally from Point Pedro to Uva Kuda Oya and the second phase as 4x4 extreme and a standard event conducted at Commando Regiment Training School Uva Kuda Oya.   Phase One is a rally which runs from Point Pedro to Uva Kuda Oya which will cover a length of approximately 775 kms over a period of six days.   This is not a timing event suited for families, corporate executives, off road enthusiasts and adventure lovers mainly but targeting 4x4 enthusiasts.   Phase One consists five legs as follows: Leg One – PPD to Nayaru – 147 kms; Leg Two – Nayaru to Dehiwatte – 146 kms; Leg Three – Dehiwatta to Maduru Oya – 176 kms; Leg Four – Maduru Oya to Arugambay – 165 kms; Leg Five – Arugambay to Uva Kuda Oya – 140 kms.   Phase Two will be a one day 4x4 extreme and a standard event .Drivers will test their skills in a challenging and a varied terrain.   This will be a timing event for the professionals on modified class 4x4 vehicles.   This event will bring the Eastern Part of Sri Lanka into limelight and will give a chance to the participants as well as to the spectators local and foreign to drive through the beautiful sandy beaches, watching the sand dunes of Manalkadu, crossing of lagoons in Challai, driving across open muddy back roads, narrow stretches of rural tracks, explore the jungles of east and to share the knowledge and experience with experienced 4x4 drivers.   Participants also will experience camping in five different areas, opportunities to move with the locals and to taste their food and engage in leisure activities such as sea bathing, boat rides and photography.   Fifty competitors took part in the inaugural event last year and the organisers are confident that this year’s event will have more competitors and will be an event to look forward to in the years to come.
