Vijayabahu MotoCross (VMC), one of the best Motor Racing competitions for the Army Commander's Challenge Trophy, organised by the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR), together with the Sri Lanka Racing Riders Association (SLRRA) will be held on April 2 for the 15th consecutive year at the VIR camp, Boyagane, Kurunegala.

Over 80 riders, including foreign riders, are expected to take part, with all winners expected to receive cash awards, stated Maj. Gen. Ajith Kariyawasam, Secretary- VMC, at the press conference recently.

VMC was organised for the first time in 2000, with racing riders of the Sri Lanka Army, with a view to popularising the sport and also to raise funds for the welfare of the VIR and their families, who laid down their lives or became disabled in the war against the terrorists.

Last year’s VMC concluded very successfully, with the participation of more than 80 competitors islandwide, including Sehan C. Adikari, Ishan Dissanayake, Ivan B. Gurusinghe, Sameera Premarathne, Nihal Wijeratne, Jax Gunawardene and international riders, showcasing the enterprising organising capabilities of the VIR.

This year’s event will undoubtedly be a great success with the unreserved commitment and organising capacity of the VIR Colonel, Centre Commandant and all ranks.

Proceeds from previous MCs were utilised for construction of houses for the members of the VIR, award of scholarships and donation of computers for the children of the members of VIR.

Moreover, not limiting to Army personnel, proceeds from this event have also been utilised for the renovation of classrooms, repairs to schools in Wayamba Province, construction of a gymnasium to international standards, and a playground for schoolchildren and the general public.
