Tennis: India’s Eqbal win boys champion at ITF Junior Circuit Week 3

Second seeded Ishaque Eqbal of India emerged the boys champion of the ITF Junior Circuit Week 3 tennis tournament with a convincing two sets to nil win over top seeded Hua-Chen Yu of Taipei in the final played at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo on Saturday (24).   Eqbal (17) was too good for Wei who incidentally won the Week 2 tournament last week as he coasted to victory with the minimum of fuss.   In the semi-finals played in the morning saw Eqbal getting the better of his compatriot Samil Jagtiani with another easy win while Chen Yu recorded a hard fought win against Jinseok Yoo of Korea in the other semi-final.   Eqbal missed out on a double when partnered by Sanil Jagtiani was beaten in the double final by another Indian pair Kabir Manrai and Anurag Nenwani by two sets to nil.   Meanwhile in the girls category Sri Lanka had two of their players in action in the semi-final with Adithya Karunaratne who won the Week 1 tournament being unfortunate as she lost to second seeded Ting-Chieh Wei of Chinese Taipei while Sri Lankan Nethmi Waduge who was the losing finalist in the Week 2 tournament was engaged in a tense battle against Da Ye Kim of Korea.   Both took a set each and Nethmi was leading in the deciding set which will be continued on Sunday (25).   The final of the girls singles and doubles events are scheduled to be played during the course of the day on Sunday (25) as well.   Results:   Singles: Semi-finals: Girls: Ting-Chieh Wei (Taipei) beat Adithya Karunaratne (Sri Lanka) 2-0 (6/1, 6/1). Boy’s: Chen Yu (Taipei) beat Jinseok Yoo (Korea) 2-1 (3/6, 6/4, 6/3); Ishaque Eqbal (India) beat Sanil Jagtiani (India) 2-0 (7/5, 6/2). Final: Boys Singles: Ishaque Eqbal (India) beat Hua-Chen Yu (Taipei) 2-0m (6/2, 6/2). Boys Doubles: Kabir Manrai/Anurag Nenwani (India) beat Ishaque Eqbal/Sanil Jagtiani (India) 2-0 (6/3, 6/0).
