Eighth seeded Savit Weerasinghe emerged the Under 18 Junior National Tennis Champion when he defeated sixth seeded Chathurya Nilaweera by two sets to one in the final played at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo on Saturday (25).
The ding-dong battle saw the champion go into the lead with a comfortable win in the first set but Nilaweera came back to make it quits with a win in the second set before Weerasinghe sealed the game in his favour with another comfortable win in the third set.
The three-setter final ended 2-1 in favour of Weerasinghe, with set scores of 6/1, 3/6 and 6/2.
In the run up to the final Weerasinghe overcame second seeded player Vibuda Wijebandara having earlier outclassed fourth seeded player Luca Knese in the quarter-final.
Nilaweera made it to the final with two hard fought wins against Vikum Jayasuriya in the quarter final and Ashen Silva which he prevailed with identical 2-1 wins.
Top seeded Kavisha Ratnayake was knocked out in the quarter finals by unseeded Ashen Silva.
