Volleyball: Book launched on 100-year history of game in Sri Lanka

The former secretary of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, (2005-2015) Susil Ranasinghe compiled a book titled; “100 years of Sri Lanka Volleyball”. 

The book launching ceremony took place at the Maharagama Youth Service Indoor Stadium, at the end of the Presidents’ Gold Cup Volley Ball Tournament final competition and the book was presented to His Excellency the President Maithreepala Sirisena. 

Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara and the present State Minister of Highways and former president SLVF Dilan Perera also participated. 

This volume contains various types of information, scenes, historical photographs, international and regional information, and a collection of activities, written to the news papers and the periodicals of Sri Lanka, compiled by Susil Ranasinghe on the centenary of the Sri Lanka Volleyball titled “100 years of Sri Lanka Volleyball”. 

“100 years of Sri Lanka Volleyball” has been dedicated to Sri Lanka Volleyball family. 

In this Volume an analysis has been made on the origin of volleyball, it’s introducing to Sri Lanka, the players both male and female, the volleyball coaches and the referees, volleyball competitions, the beach volleyball and school volleyball, disable volleyball, professionals volleyball, volleyball literature, volleyball clubs, the patrons, the media, the special occasions of Sri Lanka volleyball and finally regarding the future of volleyball Sri Lanka. 

In the appendix to this volume contains, the photographs and against those the respective years from 1951-2016 had been included, the presidents and the secretaries of volley ball federations. 

The captains of teams both men and women. Players of the volleyball national teams, the national junior and young team players, beach volleyball players both male and female. 

Towards the end of the volume, the names of the countries, which are engaged in global volleyball, affiliated to the International Volleyball Federation, and the abridged names of the countries, and the details including the national flags are included. 

In this volume the special occasions in the game of volleyball have been included along with the photographs. 

Out of the information included to this volume, the most important fact is to allocate, numbers to those players both male and female against their respective names, on the basis of the English Alphabetical order. 

Along with that against the names of those male and female players the year in which they have represented. Sri Lanka for the first time and in front of that year on the basis of the years they have represented are indicated. 

This analysis for the first time had been done by Susil Ranasinghe in his book "100 years of Sri Lanka Volleyball’’. 

Further, the details of national young men and female players, details have been included. 

At the end of the volume, a specialty is that the first photograph of players taken after the introduction of volleyball in the year 1895 a rare photograph which had not been published up to that date and not shown in the Colombo Young Men’s (News Bulletin - in 1916) has been included. 

“100 years of Sri Lanka Volleyball’’ is a publication of S. Godage Brothers in Maradana. 

It is Susil Ranasinghe who gets the credit and the honour of being the editor, of the book “Volleyball Then and Now’’ the book launched in the year 2013 regarding the history of Volleyball in Sri Lanka.
