Waterpolo: Royal made to fight before beating Nalanda

Experienced Royal College swimmers overcame a fighting Nalanda outfit by 15 goals to 8 goals in their inaugural Water Polo encounter at the Royal swimming complex on Saturday (27). 

It was a tougher experience for the Reid Avenue boys than expected. 

The Nalanda swimmers gave the some team some anxious moments in the third and fourth quarters of the game, with some breath taking movements to score four quick goals while Royal were leading 11-4 at the end of the third quarter managed to score only an equal number of goals. 

The game started with Royal taking a 4-1 lead through goals scored by No. 7 Dulanjan Fernando, No. 12 Shamod Edirisinghe, No. 5 Isiwaruna De Silva and No. 8 Savinda Dissanayake. 

Nalanda scored their first goal in the last minute of the first quarter when No. 10 Arosha Perera with a powerful shoot beat the Royal custodian.    

Royal added three more goals to their tally through Isiwaruna De Silva, Dulanjan Fernando and Dilesha De Fonseka as Nalanda came back to the game with two quick goals scored in succession by Senal Hasintha and Ranidu Jayatilleke making score stand 7-3 in favour of Royal at the end of second quarter. 

Coming into the third quarter with a new pattern of play that revolved over taking more shots from the range, and feeding the ball to a couple of key players as much as possible was rewarded with Royal adding four more goals scored by Mithila Illukpitiya twice, Shamod Edirisinghe and Isiwaruna De Silva scoring his third goal while Nalanda managed with only one goal through Senal Hasintha. Royal led 11-4. 

In the final quarter both sides playing their hearts out exhibited a fine brand of water polo with both sides scoring four goals each with Nalanda's Arosha Perera stood above scoring a hat-trick of goals. 

For Royal Savinda Dissanayake was the pick with two goals while Dulanjan Fernando and Dilesha De Fonseka scored a goal each. 

For Nalanda Ranidu Jayatilleke in the nick of the final whistle scored a goal as Royal emerged winner in this inaugural encounter with a 15-8 win
