Kasun Abeysekera of Royal staged a magnificent fight back to inflict a 8-10, 8-10, 9-7, 9-2, 9-3 defeat on Ashwin Peiris also of Royal in a men’s open event match at the 28th senior nationals open squash championship that got underway at the CH and FC courts yesterday.
Abeysekera was looking at a certain defeat after he conceded the first two sets to Peiris 8-10, 8-10 however Abeysekera used all his experience to out gun Peiris in the next three sets 9-7, 9-2, 9-3 to seal an exciting win.
In the women’s open event Musaeus had a field day which saw three of their school players in action. From the three players two emerged victorious.
Musaeus Sherangi Wijekulasooriya had the better of D.C. Hapukotuwa of the Police 9-0, 9-0 9-3 while Nimasha Rupasinghe of Musaeus beat Ruwangi Wijekulasooriya of Musaeus 9-0, 9-3, and 9-4.
In last years Championships Saman Tillekeratne became the champion while in the women’s section Nirasha Guruge was the champion. This year they have introduced an under 23 event for the first time.,
