Already with the first Test in their pocket, the Australians made a strong impact once again in the second, when they finished the day at a strong 241 for 3 with only 29 adrift and seven wickets in hand at the Adelaide Oval here today.
After the New Zealand opener Aaron Redmond had given them a roaring start with a telling knock of 83, the New Zealand's tail capitulated without even a whimper of resistance, Australia have taken control of proceedings.
The early loss of Hayden and Katich was overcome by a great partnership 106 run between Ponting and Hussey, with the later now enjoying a fruitful stand with Michael Clarke.
Pointing back in form scored an typically elegant 79 runs while Hussey remained unbeaten on 69 along with Michael Clarke who was not out 43 to add another 86 runs for the 4th wicket.
The New Zealand bowlers have toiled away manfully, but would have hoped to pick up a few more wickets before the close. Australia are ahead in this one, but New Zealand are not out of it.
