On the afternoon of February 22nd 2009, the Bogambara stadium resounded with the sound of roaring cheers when 4000 students of Girls' High School Kandy celebrated their 130th anniversary sports meet.
The sports meet was held under the distinguished patronage of Mrs. Shirani Weerakoon (Secretary Ministry of Sports and Education, Central Province) who was the chief guest and Mr. K.S. H.M.W.W. Seneveratne (Coordinator of Physical Education, University of Peradeniya) who was the guest of honour. They were welcomed by the principal Mrs. M. Abeygunasekera, deputy principals Mrs. M. Walala, Mrs. V. Abeykoon, Mrs. S. Dassanayake, prefect of games Mrs. P. Herath, the 4 house whips and the school captain Ms. Nusrath Maharoof.
The students competed under the four houses Eaton, Langdon, Lawrance and Sansom. The houses have been named after four most prestigious founder principals and for this reason the annual sports meet is conducted with great pomp and ceremony each year.
Under the guidance of Mrs. Priyanga Herath and the members of the sports unit, Mrs. Dilani Wijesekera, Mrs. Anusha Vilashini and Mrs. Thanuja Gunasinghe the students proved their mettle. The games captain Ms. Subodha Ratnayake and games vice captain Ms. Ovinee Wadasinghe and the board of prefects rose to the occasion with their special display to commemorate the 130th anniversary.
The drill displays have also always been the star event at the schools sports meets. With the usual creativity and innovation the students really put their heart and soul into it.
Lawrance house captained by Ms. Ayesha Thillakaratne emerged winners while Sanson, Eaton, Langdon were palace 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. The event brought together the present and past pupils and teachers in one harmonious comradeship of sport.
