CEB workers to protest as bill comes to parliament

Ceylon Electricity Board workers will stage a sick-note protest campaign and a demonstration in Colombo on Tuesday – the day on which Parliament is set to approve the controversial Sri Lanka Electricity Bill.

Power and Energy Minister John Seneviratna said the bill was beneficial to electricity consumers. But trade union leaders warned that it would lead to the privatisation of the CEB and job cuts.

CEB Trade Union member Rajan Jayalal said they would not resort to strike action given the country’s war situation but would stay away from work and stage a protest.

He said that though they were considerate of the country’s situation, union activists had been intimidated.
