While the agitation of failed Golden Key Credit Card Co (GK) depositors against the management of the company intensified, the Central Bank (CB) on Thursday urged them to submit details of monies invested in the company.
Protesting depositors said they came under attack on two occasions this week -- allegedly by thugs at Wellampitiya on Wednesday and outside the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s courts on Thursday.
In a newspaper advertisement, the CB said details of deposits could be submitted with supporting documents in a format that has been shown in the ad. The CB placed three advertisements this week calling on 'every present or past director, Chief Executive Officer, Manager, Employee and agent of (GK) and other Related & Relevant Parties' to submit a declaration of assets and liabilities to the Monetary Board before May 15. The Monetary Board also requested the public to provide information relating to the assets and liabilities of these individuals. A senior official of the Central Bank told the Sunday Times FT a special task force unit has been set up at the bank to handle this matter.
He said that details of GK employees are necessary to find out as to whether any of them had been financially and nlawfully benefited from the company. It will also help the CID investigations, he said.
He added that the bank is following the Supreme Court directive and they are now in the process of receiving the affidavits of GK directors and they should follow instructions appeared in newspaper advertisements. Other officials said information from depositors have been sought to clarify the information (relating to their deposits) to ensure it is in line with the GK records. Some depositors were concerned that it would raise tax issues. The Supreme Court fundamental rights case comes up tomorrow. |
