A guide book on Sri Lankan Birds written in the Russian language and published by the Russian based JMT Travels Tour Operators was launched recently at Sri Lanka Tourism.

The book on Sri Lankan birds is a 122 page volume giving scientific names of the various bird species as well over 120 colourful photos of birds. Professional biologists specializing in birds, visited Sri Lanka and observed the feathered creatures in varous parts of the island before the book was finally compiled, a press release from the Sri Lanka Tourist Board (SLTB) said.

Many years of research and information have gone into this book which will form part of a series that will also include national parks of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is home to many species of birds apart from migratory birds that visit the country from far away destinations during specific times of the year. Therefore, apart from the Kumana Bird Sanctuary, various locations in the country have become home to exotic birds that come from many parts of the world.

Commenting on the launch of this book, Vladimir Mikhaylov, Ambassador of Russia in Sri Lanka said the book will present a different side of Sri Lanka to the Russian traveller, who is very much interested in the historical and cultural aspects of the island.

JMT Travels Tour Operators mainly focus on clients inclined to travel to Sri Lanka and have over 10 years of experience in the Sri Lankan market. Natalia Chelnokova, Managing Director of JMT Travels stated in the press release, “We are also planning to launch a website for Sri Lanka, and with the end of the conflict situation, Sri Lanka is bound to become a much sought after destination for the Russian tourist.”
The photos in the book will also travel throughout Russia, forming an exhibition at universities and schools.
