The maiden show of ‘Kira’, the latest theatrical production of playwright and well-known actor Jayasekara Aponso will go on boards at 7 pm today, July 5 at the Elphinstone Theatre, Maradana.
Having produced a number of popular stage plays like ‘Pathala Soldaduwo’ and ‘Thatu’, the newest ‘Kira’ played by Aponsu himself in the lead depicts how the culture and the valuable traditions are being changed due to the urbanization and how the young villagers coming to the town get lost in the rat race and become victims of social evils.
“The story of the play is based on a number of personal experiences I underwent. Having born and brought up in the hill-country, Nuwaraeliya and came to Colombo, I have come across many of my friends in the village who underwent this transformation in Colombo,” Aponsu, director, producer cum scriptwriter said to the TV Times describing about his play.
“Once I was moved by a story, where a youth from my area who came to Colombo and got addicted to drugs and committed suicide by jumping from a high building,” Aponsu said.
If we closely examine we will be able to identify a large number of ‘Kiras’ in our society, he added. The play also highlights characters like ‘Sakvithi’, the products of this society who became popular for their bogus scams over the recent past.
Among the others in the cast include Mahinda Karunaratne, Rukshi Gamage, Anura Perera, Dilini Niroshika, Ranjith Ruwanwella, Wasantha Kasthuriarachchi, Gayan Mapalagama, Nihal Bandara, Lakshamn Fernando, Keerthi de Silva, Saman Himbuta, Nayanathara Upananada, Nadeeka Hettiarachchi and Premila Madhushani.
Jayantha Rathnayake directs the musical score of the play while Gamini Costa handles the make up, Jayasekara Aponso and Mahathun Gamage the stage setting while Rashmi Sneha Gamage is in charge of the costume designing and stage management.
