Deff Rude aim high

By Madhushala Senaratne, Pix by Sanka Vidanagama

When you start doing something “just for fun,” but it gradually begins to look good…ah! Now that’s something for you to actually think about. And, this is precisely what Deff Rude did.

Deff Rude was formed about a year back, when two friends, Geesa Senadeera (15), Eshana Gabadamudalige (15) who had the idea for quite sometime before that, met their perfect third member, Nadeera Illeperumaarachchi (15). Together, they’ve been performing at various functions and charity concerts over the past year and are now on their way to releasing their very own songs.

“We mainly play pop, rock and R&B,” says Geesa of their music. All three of them sing, which they’ve been doing for quite some time now anyway, and are especially interested in rock music. Explaining the themes explored in their original songs, Geesa says, “We’ve explored ideas such as peace, love and terrorism”.

“The idea of forming a band first came up about three years ago. Geesa wanted to do it”, says Eshana. He adds, “We started doing this for fun. We sang something that didn’t make much sense, and yeah…”, But, like they’ve now found out, this endeavour that didn’t make much sense then, has turned out to be pretty interesting.

“His dad, Diliup Gabadamudalige”, says Geesa, pointing to Eshana, “helped us a lot.” In fact, a few of the originals by the band – “Here Forever” and “This time it’s different” – will be featured in the upcoming album of Diliup Gabadamudalige, well known local keyboardist, composer, arranger, lyricist, producer and performer. The album, titled ‘Collaboration’ is due to be released on January 26.

Of their experience so far, Nadeera says it’s been great and there’s much they’ve learnt. The work was very hard, challenging, but interesting nevertheless, adds Geesa, while Eshana says, there’s much more they hope to do. “We’re hoping to release an album soon,” they say.

It’s relatively easy to form a band. You like music, you start playing it and doing something interesting with it. What is hard is to keep it going. But, these guys are aiming high.
