Study Interior Design @ Sri Lanka's Only Dedicated Design Campus
B A (Hons) Interior Design, Northumbria University UK

The Academy in its history nearing a decade has earned a respected position and assumed a leadership role in the visual arts and design sector in Sri Lanka by acting as an educational resource and a cultural melting pot for creativity and diversity within Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan and international community has demonstrated its support for the design programmes offered at the Academy by providing internship opportunities for students, acting as guest jurors critiquing student work, and providing various live collaborative projects.

The Academy of Design education honours and recognizes the importance of integrating elements of heritage and culture within its curriculum as much as introducing students to contemporary design. The end result is that all students are now defining their own design language. Creativity and design, knowledge and innovation, culture and traditions are the key ingredients necessary for sound global development.

Today, Sri Lanka has entered into a new phase of cultural dialogue. The government has recognized the potential of design and today Sri Lanka necessitates inspiring her unique design traditions through the education of Sri Lankan designers. Together, Sri Lanka and Design are the bridge fusing tradition with modernization. It is the engine for cultural and intellectual exchange between Sri Lanka and the rest of the world.

Programmes and Curricula

The curriculum for the degree programme consistent with the standards of education in UK and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northumbria University is awarded upon successful completion of all the requirements of the individual programme.

The studio model followed by the Academy of Design (AOD) requires students to participate in both informal critiques and formal jury presentations where they must discuss and defend their design decisions before their peers, instructors, and outside evaluators.

The programme at AOD is logically sequenced to provide systematic learning and reinforce important concepts as students proceed through the programme. AOD curricula emphasize excellence that combines both contemporary and traditional methods of teaching so that students are equipped with the essential tools necessary to expand their ingenuity and become flourishing designers. Each of the three degree programmes - Graphic Design, Fashion Design, and Interior Design - reflect the structure, curricula, courses, and general requirements that are equivalent to those at the campus in Northumbria University, UK.

Interior Design
Interior designers work with space and creatively solve the needs of people to form imaginative interior environments that are functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasant. Interior design involves the flow and shaping of integrated spaces; the selection and coordination of finishes, material, textures, and colours; the planning and selection of lighting and other electronic equipment; and the choosing of appropriate furnishings and equipment.

At the Academy, students receive the education and experience they need to excel as interior designers. They must have a firm knowledge of technical graphic communication and develop the ability to present information both manually and by computer. Additionally, students study the history of interior design environments and theories of design.

Students learn among lecturers who are interior design professionals and who bring their background and current professional experiences to the programme to ensure the highest quality of interior design education. The professional expertise of the Academy faculty adds tremendous value to both the classroom and studio settings. The curriculum blends the breadth of a university education with the practical value and insight gained from a professional programme.
