Asian Aviation Centre, the Premier Aeronautical Engineering and Flying Academy in Sri Lanka announced that the Engineering intakes for the year 2009 will commence in September.
The programmes include BEng (Hons) in Engineering design - Aerospace / Mechanical / Automotive and Higher National Diploma in Engineering design. For students who wish to enrol for Aircraft Engineering, AAC offers a Foundation Degree in Aircraft Engineering which covers the EASA (JAR) IR Pt66 knowledge requirement. All the above programmes are conducted in affiliation with Kingston University London. A spokesperson for AAC commented that students who have completed their A/Ls in 2009, could apply for the above programmes pending results. In addition, the AAC Engineering academy will be enrolling students for the Foundation Degree in Aviation Studies for Commercial Pilot Training.
This exciting degree programme is designed to provide the student with a broad base of knowledge and additional skills and help him/her gain employment within the airline industry. It provides the opportunity for students in Sri Lanka and neighbouring South Asian countries to reach for higher domains of aviation studies in a more cost effective manner, and compete for employment in the flying sector on a more equitable basis with their counterparts from developed countries.
A key feature of the Foundation Degree is that the curriculum provides the educational base for the ground school phase of an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) programme. This degree programme will be a two year full time course in Sri Lanka. On completion of the Foundation Degree the student has the option to proceed to Kingston University -London to follow a one year top-up programme to obtain a BSc (Hons) in Aviation Studies Degree. Students who have sat A/Ls in 2009 are encouraged to apply pending results.
The course is programmed to allow students to get practical flying experience to meet the requirements of Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka for Private Pilot Licence and Commercial Pilot Licence with Instrument and Multi Engine Ratings, within the two year period, in addition to the Foundation Degree awarded by the Kingston University. Furthermore, students will be equipped to sit the ATPL Technical Examinations and obtain a frozen ATPL.
The Foundation Degree in Aviation Studies will not only assist students to acquire theory knowledge up to the ATPL level but in addition develop their analytical skills, time management skills, team work skills and a variety of other "soft skills" expected by commercial airlines, thereby enhancing the employability of students.
