Sri Lanka’s Central Bank (CB) on Wednesday warned the public of ‘unscrupulous persons’ claiming to have been authorized to sell gold belonging to the CB.
“... various offers have allegedly been made by such persons to members of the public. The relevant authorities are now investigating these scams and steps will be taken by them to trace, identify and take the necessary legal steps to deal with the offenders,” the CB said in a statement. It said the public should not be duped by these unscrupulous claims, since the CB is not selling any gold and therefore these claims to sell gold on behalf of the Central Bank are completely false.
Some weeks back, the opposition United National Party accused the Central Bank of selling gold owned by the government without being permitted to do so.
The Central Bank rejected the accusations saying no such deals have been entered into. |
