Dinesh Devapriya of Sri Lanka Navy pulled the biggest upset of the day when he scored a 9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 9-11 and 11-6 win over defending champion Buddika Walagampola at the 63rd Table Tennis National Championship worked off at the S.Thomas’ College Gymnasium yesterday.
As expected defending champion Walagampola won the first set 11-9, the next two sets was won by Dinesh Devapriya 11-5 and 11-7 respectively. The fourth set saw Walagampola winning it at 11-9 and crucial final set went to Devapriya at 11-6.
Rohan Sirisena (Sri Lanka Air Force) the number one seed scored a 11-2, 11-5 and 11-5 win over P. Chavy of St. Anthony’s College Katugastota.
Sirisena had an easy time with Chavy not giving him much of an opposition. Eimantha Udayanga of Dharmasoka was stretched to five sets before pulling off a 11-3, 6-11, 11-4, 5-11, 11-4 win over K.A.Hettiarachchi (Kingswood).
There was another five set match with Milinda Lakshitha of the Sri Lanka Air Force pulling off a 11-7, 10-12, 9-11, 11-8 and 11-9 win over U.W.Kanil of Devananda. It was an exciting match with Lakshitha edging through.
Sri Lanka Navy’s Sajitha Kavinda scored a 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 12-10 win over Rasika Manoj of Anura Central Yakkala. In the Girl’s category Saranga de Silva of Commercial Bank beat Dunali Nuwanga of Devananda 8-11, 11-6, 11-2 and 12-10.
In another match Chandima Madushani of Mahamaya Kandy scored a 11-8, 11-5, 3-11 and 11-4 win over Kasuni Pitigala of Southlands Galle. |
