Retire now if you like: President to CDS

A written confirmation of Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka’s offer to retire with effect from Friday was conveyed to him last night, the government announced.

Media Centre for National Security Director General Lakshman Hulugalla told the Sunday Times Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga acknowledging the letter of resignation of General Fonseka informed him that he could retire with immediate effect.

This would effectively mean that Gen. Fonseka could continue as CDS till Dec 1 though the President is prepared to accept his resignation with immediate effect.

Earlier Gen Fonseka sought permission to retire with effect from December 1.
