Former Navy Commander passes away

Admiral A. W. H. Perera, VSV, ndc, who was Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy from June 1979 to May 1983, passed away yesterday after a brief illness.

His remains lie at No. 83/1, Pagoda Road, Nugegoda. The funeral with full military honours takes place today at 10.30 am at the General Cemetery, Borella.

Admiral A. W. H. Perera, who was born in 1930, joined the Royal Ceylon Navy as a Sub Lieutenant.
He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1973, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 1962, and Commander in 1970.

He was a member of the United Nations Military Observers team in west Iran in 1962, and was Co-ordinating Officer in Polonnaruwa in 1972. He retired on June 1, 1983, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Admiral.

Admiral Perera, who also served as the Sri Lanka Ambassador to Kenya, was awarded the Vishista Seva Vibhusanaya; the Republic of Sri Lanka Armed Services Medal; the Sri Lanka Armed Services Long Service Medal, and the President’s Inauguration Medal.
