Maritime protection a global necessity, says Navy Chief

All maritime regions should be protected and trade routes kept open and safe for the economic survival of nations around the world, said Navy Commander, Vice-Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe.

The Navy Commander made this observation in his inaugural address at the recent Indo-Sri Lanka seminar on “Countering Maritime Threats Posed by Non-State Actors”.

The seminar was held at the Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo, and was organised by the Ministry of Defence, Strategic Affairs Division, and the National Maritime Foundation of India (NMF).

Admiral Arun Prakash, former Chief of Naval Staff, India, and head of the National Maritime Foundation, India, delivered the keynote address.

During the two-day seminar, held on November 4 and 5, naval and military officers shared their expertise, while military experts and specialists in maritime affairs conducted lectures on a range of issues relating to maritime protection.
