Kandy cricket wrecked by rain
By Aubrey Kuruppu

Rain, rain and more rain has wreaked havoc with the third term inter school cricket matches in Kandy. As a result, wins have been few and far between. It is difficult to pin-point any team as being the best. Trinity and Dharmaraja suffered least from the yearly exodus of players and they field the most experienced outfits. Yet their results have not been anything to enthuse about.

Left hand middle order bat Mohamed Sajid leads Trinity. A very consistent player last year, runs have inexplicably deserted him. Opener Noroshan Dikwella continues to be in the news. Leg spinner Akila Jayasundera who grabbed over a hundred wickets in 2008/09, seems to have suffered a bit of burn out. The form of off spinner Suresh Wickrema has been outstanding and he had virtually carried the Trinity bowling on his shoulders. Trinity has one outright win in four games.

All rounder Ramesh Yapa Bandara who captains the Rajans has yet to deliver the big knocks he is capable of. Rahula Ekanayake, a Centurion, has shown impressive all round form. Diminutive left hander Sandun Weerakkodi has made several important contributions. The Silvas – Taraka and Pratap – have got among the wickets. Dhamaraja, coached by an old hand, Ananda Wijesekera, scored an outright win over Sri Sumangala Panadura and missed another against Rahula Matara by a whisker.

Adil Reyal, the Anthorian bundle of talent, has a big haul of wickets in the four games played. However, his batting has been disappointing as he tends to self destruct. Skipper Dulash Kumarasinghe has played a couple of match-saving innings, but more runs are expected of him. Consistent left hander Hiran Wickremasekera and youngster Manoj Sarachchandra have made hundreds, one win and three draws has been their output for the season.

Towering all rounder Udara Hettige, a centurian, leads Kingswood, and has contributed with both bat and ball. Hasitha Dharmaprema has made a couple of fifties but has to convert his middling scores into big ones. Ushan Wickremasinghe and Lakshita Madusanka have chipped in. Inesh Rabel has made starts but has to go on. They have 3 first innings wins in six matches.

Nuwan Nilantha, a neat right hander who captains the Sylvestrians, has been their main run-getter. Dhananjaya Athauda has been among the wickets, while Ruwantha Ekanayake has shown promise. Paceman Lucky Alwis, who uses the long- handle to good effect, should do more.

Stubborn left hander Tirantha Dissanaike who captains Vidyaratha has been consistent. Kasun Wijekoon has a hundred against Trinity to his credit. Experienced all rounder Sameera Abeyratne should take more responsibility. Hard-hitting left hander Dinusha Gunatilleka should learn to temper his aggression. They have first innings wins over St Mary’s Kegalle and Kegalu Vidyalaya.

Kandy District left arm spinner Amith Tillekeratne has a bag of 22 wickets in three matches. The Sri Rahula Skipper has also contributed with the bat. Off spinner Sunimal Dissanaike has two five wicket bags. Nimesha Wanasundera has been the best of the batsman. They have an outright win.
