Sailors lead in Defence Games

The fifth Defence Services Games ceremonially got underway with Sri Lanka Navy in the lead. Twenty-five championships have already been completed with Navy leading with 10 points. Air Force with 8.5 points and Army with 6.5 points are occupying the 02nd and 03rd slots respectively. This year, sports men and women from three Armed Services are competing for 29 championships (22 men championships and 07 women championships) in 22 sports disciplines.

The fifthDefence Services Games are now in the final stage of completion with three forces vying for the coveted overall Championship. Men and women athletics and finals of basket ball and cricket are now being worked off with the Games’ most outstanding performance so far coming from Sri Lanka Navy’s NCD Priyadarshani who established a new national record with a leap of 13.39 metres in the women triple jump. Priyadarshani smashed a seven-year record of 13.00 meters set by Anushka Ekneligoda in 2002.

The Closing Ceremony is scheduled to be held on the 23rd November 2009 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.
