An opportunity that students should not miss
By Prof. J.A. Karunaratne

A silent revolution but one that has profound relevance and significance for the youth of the emerging economies i.e. Sri Lanka is currently in progress. This concerns the giant shift in the global economic structure that has been making its way since about the dawn of the new decade, the teens.
The factors that have contributed to this shift in the global economy are several. The first factor may be the 'green imperatives'. With green imperatives, the old world pollution-intensive industries are on their way out whilst new, environment friendly, so-called 'green industries' are on their way in thus catering for the emergent market for green goods.

Secondly, due to shifts in the demographic profile of the world, in particular in the countries where population control measures have been in place for the past several decades, a major drive to increase per capita productivity has gained currency. This has become more poignant since the ageing population of countries such as China is increasing rapidly whilst the working population has started to decline. Thus as worker-dependent ratio (the size of the population relative to the number of workers) is increasing, if growth momentum has to be maintained and if the welfare standard of the country has to be sustained, it has become necessary to increase the per capita productivity over and above the figures that prevail. This gives major impact on the existing mode of production and constitute itself as another factor that contributes to making silent revolution that is under way, today.

Thirdly, the emergence of the high growth economies of Asia (in particular China and India) as new economic superpowers of the world has also impact on this silent revolution. As these countries emerge as economic superpowers, they exert greater demand for goods and services in their internal markets whilst they are making headway diversifying their markets to the countries that have in previous centuries been very much in the periphery of the global market economy.

Then there are other factors to consider as new technologies that render significant impact on this silent revolution of which in particular India and China are playing prominent roles. Some of these high growth economies have taken active measures to wind down their focus in old labour-intensive, energy-intensive and pollution-intensive industries whilst seeking to stimulate, in their place, the technology-intensive (high-tech) energy-efficient, green industries.

In a world that thus keeps changing rapidly, if to be best prepared for what may come, the youth of today requires to arm themselves with scientific knowledge and technological skills that will help them manage their way into the future that for many still remain so distant and unclear.

The silent revolution as such does not constitute a challenge instead one that avails the youth with many opportunities. First, it gives opportunities for the youth to make impacts both in terms of employment and higher income that is relevant at a personal level. Then it gives the youth the opportunity to contribute to growth in national output and national wellbeing.

It is in this context the youth of today should view the social science programmes introduced by advanced educational institutions. It should be appropriate to note at this point that the Faculty of Commercial Sciences at CINEC is one that stands miles ahead of most other institutions of advance learning elsewhere in Sri Lanka. This is not least due to the fact that the courses conducted at CINEC follows the most up-to-date and reformed curricula and study programmes recognised by world institutions of learning in the field.

The BSc in International Transport Management and Logistics facilitated by CINEC is offered by the Dalian Maritime University (DMU), one of the top universities in the subject (a partner of the International Maritime Organisation of the UN) allows the student to continue in their studies towards MSc, MBA and PhD. On the other hand if the student wishes he or she has the opportunity secure him/herself a career in aviation, shipping, freight forwarding, and import and export industry and for seaports and airports.
Most certainly it is with this knowledge that CINEC students iterated when questioned once recently, that: 'Our intention is not just to pass the exam.

We want to acquire the scientific knowledge and technological skills that can carry us forth and give us greater income and better job opportunities in the future.' CINEC students are aware that the job opportunities for those who have acquired qualifications in international transportation management and logistics are good all over where trade and transport activities are developing and expanding thus providing lucrative employment opportunities in transport and logistic sectors. This comprehends for the most part the countries of Asia where management of trade and logistic activities expand due to speedy development of green industries, growth due diversification and expansion of global trade and high-tech industrial development.

The courses explore the key activities in logistics and transport management at a strategic level, alternative logistics and distribution strategies are presented and the use of e-commerce and IT systems are demonstrated. Case studies are being used to demonstrate the significance of logistics to different industries and to explore different modes of transport and distribution. In particular, the course develops the ability of the student to think analytically about the nature and scope of logistics and transport operations and to take rigorous approach to logistics and transport planning.

The degrees offered at the Faculty of Commercial Sciences at CINEC aim at developing high calibre graduates with well grounded and up-to-date scientific knowledge and technical skills. The BSc offered in International Transportation Management and Logistics is one such course that address the new opportunities availed by silent revolution that is under way currently.
