The Prize giving of the American International School (Primary and Upper School) was held on December 17 2009 at the School Auditorium.
The Chief Guest was Professor Narada Warnasuriya, former Vice Chancellor and Professor of Pediatrics of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura .The Guests of Honour were Mrs Warnasuriya and Mr. Mahinda Mangalagama.

The chief guests and the other distinguished guests who were received at the school gate by the Chief Executive Officer, the Director Operations, the Principal and the other officials of the school were conducted to the Auditorium by the school Junior Western Band along with the flower girls strewing jasmines along the path.
Mrs. Sherryn Yaseen Mangalagama, the Chief Executive Officer of the American International School in her welcome address highlighted the noteworthy progress and the remarkable achievements since its founding in 1997, solicited the continuous cooperation of the teachers, students, members of the management as well as the parents and well wishers.
The Principal Mrs. H. Dahanayake who read out the school report in her address emphasized the progress achieved over the past year and the steps and measures taken for the improvement of the curricular, co-curricular and extra- curricular activities of all sections of the school.

Stress was laid on the activities planned to help motivate and encourage students due to face the London O Level Examination in 2010.
The Keynote address was by the Chief Guest Professor Narada Warnasuriya.. Professor Warnasuriya stated he was highly impressed by the talents and creativity demonstrated by the students in their entertainment items and outstanding academic achievements of some of the students. He also said learning is a life long process and the school should be the place which inculcates values in children and help them shape their characters.
The highlight of the prize giving was the award of special prizes to students with outstanding performances at international, regional and school levels. Shehara Mangalagama was awarded a Gold Medal from the University of New South Wales for top performance in the Asian region in English and Math and a Gold Medal for the highest local score in the same subjects. Aminath Ishva Afeef was awarded the Mac Milan Gold Medal for Science. Ahamed Maouzoon and Fathimath Ishah Afeef were awarded Gold Medals for Science and English respectively.
The variety entertainment presented by the students consisted many interesting items that made parents feel proud of their children. The quality and the creativity of the programme evidently demonstrated that their children are in the capable hands of a school which is taking a holistic view of education and is recognizing the concept of the 'Whole- Child'.
The final event of the day was the graduation of students. This was a very colourful ceremony with students in their red cloaks and caps, reminiscent of the American system of education. One group of students graduated to the Junior school, and the other from grade VIII graduated to the Senior school, and are on the threshold of collegiate and further education. |
