The Lionel Wendt Theatre will come alive with the sounds of Gospel and spiritual music on January 16, as Soul Sounds brings you ‘The Glorious Quest – O Happy Day’, conducted by Prof. D. Mark Wilson.
Prof. Wilson who hails from California has been involved in Gospel and spiritual music from his childhood, having been exposed to it through his family’s southern musical heritage. Over the years he has continued to keep this heritage alive by singing with and training numerous Gospel choirs including the UC Berkeley Gospel Chorus. Involved in the spread of Gospel music in the global community, this is his third visit to Sri Lanka. The concert is titled ‘Oh Happy Day’ as it is the 40th anniversary of the famous version of this song first sung by the Edwin Hawkins Singers.
Soul Sounds is an award-winning all female choral group which attempts to broaden their repertoire and master new styles of music. Prof. Wilson’s enthusiasm and guidance has helped the choir not only to learn the nuances of Gospel music but also to foster an immense love and appreciation for the genre.
This will be the third concert that brings together Prof. Wilson and Soul Sounds to give local audiences an experience they will never forget. Soul Sound’s musical director is the well known pianist/musician Soundarie David Rodrigo, and Prof Wilson, has been appointed the choir’s international guest conductor.
This time, music lovers in Kandy too will get an opportunity to experience vibrant and inspirational Gospel and spiritual music as Soul Sounds takes this concert to the Trinity College Chapel on January 17.
Tickets for the Colombo show will be available at the Lionel Wendt from January 11. |
