The five-week programme will take place in January in Antarctica at the science center at the USA McMurdo base. Nishad may be the first Sri Lankan to do research in Antarctica.
Born and raised in Galle, Nishad is an old boy of Richmond College and President Scout who represented Sri Lanka at the SAARC jamboree in India and later went to Japan for a cultural exchange programme.
Keenly interested in focusing on a field that would be beneficial to Sri Lanka, he is studying Marine Sciences on a graduate fellowship at Stanford University. He is currently at the Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University working on his thesis on temperature effects on heart function in marine fish.
In his spare time, together with his fellow Sri Lankans in USA, he has built a web based network to help other Sri Lankan students to achieve their higher educational goals. See www.sl2college.com. |
