Annual Prize Giving at D.S. Senanayake College

D.S. Senanayake College Colombo 07 conducted their Annual Prize Giving on 10th February 2010 at the college main hall under the patronage of Minister of Education Hon. Susil Premajayantha. This in one of the most colourful events at the school where the students and teachers achievements are honoured and rewarded.

There are many students who have brought both fame and pride to the school at district and at National levels. They are being given special prizes for their dedication and commitment for their work to achieve success. Special achievement awards were also given to teachers for not being absent to school for one year and on other various grounds.

  1. The deputy principal Mrs. Lilani Samaranayake carried away the prestigious award for the Best Annual Report and Account Competition in 2009 jointly organized by the Ministry of Education and The Association of Accounting Technicians of Sri Lanka.
  2. The teacher is change of Agriculture Mrs. Deepa Mendis carried away the prize for her contribution in Agriculture in the "Api Wawamu Rata Nagamu" launched by the ministry of education for all schools in the Island in 2008. D.S Senanayake College was placed 1st in the western province and second all island among the National and other schools that participated.

The students eligible to enter universities as per their A/L marks is 64% in 2009 in all streams. The school hopes to achieve 75% university intake in 2010. D.S. Senanayake College has been categorized as a prestigious college in achieving academic educational success in a disciplined environment in the island.

A proud achievement by a student Gayan Madushanka in the G.C.E. A/L 2009 by becoming the 5th position in the Island rank and 4th position in District rank in the Bio Science stream. The chief guest Hon. Susil Premajayantha speaking at the occasion said that D.S. Senanayake College has achieved great heights in education producing scholars during a short span of history of 43 years. This is the only school in the island where a steady growth in education, sports and other projects are undertaken for the benefit of the children during this short period. This school will certainly produce valuable citizens, who will bring fame to their alma mater.

The principal Dr. Asoka Senani Hewage said the motive for giving prizes to children is not to select No 1 and 2 positions, but to encourage children to achieve high marks in their respective subjects we are compelled to select few positions according to marks, because we cannot give prizes for all. He appreciated the parents for their co-operation to achieve great heights in education. This is a school that has focused more on education from its inception in 1967 under the stewardship of Mr. R.I.T. Alles.
In strictly following the new education reforms set by the national institute of education D.S. Senanayake College has been able to upgrade the standard of education and bring in good results at the Advanced Level in the year 2009.

The new education reforms which has brought is changes in the teaching process, has enabled the school to use more affective methods of teaching to enhance the competency based learning process. To meet the new challenges and the competency level of every student, the school has organized a set of educational development projects beginning from grade 6 to A/L together with a feed forward assessment process to strengthen the students ability to face examination successfully.

The education development unit of the school headed by Mr. Dananjaya Rupasinghe has assisted the students in providing special revision sessions, discussions on model papers by lecturers and new projects has immensely helped students in comprehensing new education reforms and producing good results at G.C.E. A/L exam in 2009.

The pleasing classroom atmosphere and model classroom selection has been very effective in creating the need to study by the quality inputs by parents and other associations in the school. D.S. Senanayaka College leader by the principal Dr. Asoka Senani Hewage has mastered the science of creating an atmosphere in the school for children to learn. The principal stated that "Reading Maketh a man".

He applauded the primary principal Mrs. Nishanthi Amarasuriya for producing a high percentage of passes at the scholarship exam in 2009 and maintaining high standard of discipline, with a caring atmosphere for the children in the school. Discipline originates from grade one in the school, so Mrs. Nishanthi Amarasuriya has set an example for other schools in the Island to follow.
