The Na tree planted on the occasion of the centenary of Neruda's birth |
On March 10 the teachers and students of Grades 10 and 11 Spanish B of The Overseas School of Colombo went on a journey to trace the footsteps of Pablo Neruda, the Chilean Nobel Prize winner of Literature, in Sri Lanka.
Neruda lived in a small house located at number 56, 42nd Lane, Wellawatte. With the address in their hands, the students and their teachers Mrs. Rossana Favero and Mrs. Eva Schlichting were able to locate the exact place where the house stood more than 70 years ago.In his Memoirs, Pablo Neruda refers to his second visit to Sri Lanka before the original house was demolished.
"The old place where I had written so many painful poems was going to be torn down soon. Its doors were worm eaten, the tropical dampness had damaged its walls, but it had stood there waiting for this final moment of parting….The sea was still humming the same old tune under the palms against the reefs".
The OSC team also visited the Viharamahadevi Park to find the Na tree that was planted on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.
This activity was inspired by the objectives of the UNESCO 2010 International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures.
